Chet Baker, despite his self-destructive life path, was brilliant to the end. Given a toss-up between Miles and Chet for "King of the Cool Trumpet/Flugelhorn", I have to give Chet the edge: not as experimental, but, strangely, given his personal life, not as musically lost as the later Miles became. Thanks for this, Peter, it was beautiful.
I love Chet Baker, especially the records where he sings like a 1950s romantic idol.
ReplyDeleteHe sings out of tune sometimes, he even has a cold in the odd song but he has a sensitivity that is usually found in the female of the species.
He sounds better the older I get.

ReplyDeleteThanks, natha and Bobelix - The Gerry Muligan Quartet with Chet Baker was the sound track to my army serve.
ReplyDeleteChet was the complete 'natural' musician - didn't read, and relied wholly on his superb ear and musicianship.
