SNP WIN WICK BY-ELECTION IN MASSIVE SWING IN RUN-UP TO HOLYROOD ELECTION

SWINGS FROM ALL LONDON LED PARTIES TO SNP AS GAIL ROSS BECOMES COUNCILLOR FOR WICK

DISASTER FOR LIBDEMS IN STRONGHOLD CONSTITUENCY

From Gail Ross - Wick Winner

On the eve of the Scottish Parliament election, the SNP has gained a council seat in a sensational breakthrough, achieving swings from all London-led parties in the Wick ward by-election for Highland Council.

The by-election was held yesterday and announced this morning, and shows the winning candidate – Gail Ross – achieving almost 50% of the vote on first preferences.

The ward lies in the Scottish Parliament constituency of Caithness, Sutherland and Ross where the SNP’s Rob Gibson is in contention with the LibDems who notionally hold the seat.

The SNP vote rose from 17% in May 2007 to 47% today, whilst the LibDems lost over a third of their vote – falling from 16% to 10%.

The swings from each of the London parties to the SNP was 12.2% from Labour; 17.8% from the LibDems; and 15.0% from the Tories.

  2. Thanks CD - but why haven't the bookies caught up with the trend? Still showing Labour odds on for most seat ...

  3. To me this is a more significant breakthrough for the Scottish people in general - than any west central potential, or not, swing to SNP.

There's a basic ground shift in attitudes happening despite the best efforts of a deplorably biased pro-unionist media.

The only legitimate thing that's going to work for Iain Gray now is a rush of sympathy votes if he cracks.

His resilience is quite remarkable and or totally insensitive to the gaffs and personal criticism surrounding him and it must speak loudly about his balance of judgement and objectivity.

Much has been made of a Jekyll and Hyde personna - but there is certainly a lot of bad news getting dealt with - and at what cost?

  4. I'm sure you're right, but there's not a lot we can do about it. I don't vote for people I feel sorry for, but I agree that some will.

  5. I think many people vote for people they feel sorry for - themselves - and thereby Labour retain a considerable reflex vote. The status of 'victim' pervades the electorate and for some unthinking reason many still consider Labour as their saviour?

  6. Thanks, Clarinda

I'm sure many people do feel that way - but some are victims. Margaret Jaconelli is now homeless, facing a court basttle to get just compensation for her home of 35 years. No political party offered her any help during the critical years when it could have made a difference. (The SNP Government made an 11th hour offer of mediation, but it was too late)

The Labour Party in Glasgow is in fact the cause of her troubles, and the have the law, the police and a chunk of the media ontheir side.

I think the biggest danger that we face as a society is the reflex instinct of the comfortably off to blame the poor and the vulnerable for their plight. It's an easy salve to conscience.

  7. Great news ...

... so why have I not found anything about it on the Scotsman webpage?

    Or the Herald.

  8. Thanks, Paco el escocés

I can't think why the Scotsman or the Herald wouldn't want to objectively report this, given their totally unbiased commitment to informing the Scottish people of matters relevant to their democratic choices.

It must be an unfortunate oversight, one I am sure they will correct at the earliest opportunity.
