The Polis - and the First Minister’s response to my comments

I received this by email yesterday. I will refrain from comment - there’s an election to be won. But make your own judgment on it, in the light of events in Dalmarnock and at Glasgow University. (See videos - especially the ‘Sun’ video - and links).

(I emailed the Scottish Government announcing my intention to reproduce it on today’s blog. I have received no objection at the time of posting.)

Mr Curran

Thank you for your email of 24 March 2011 to the First Minister in which you express concerns over recent events at Glasgow University and Ardenlea Street, Glasgow. I have been asked by the First Minister to thank you for your email and to reply on his behalf.

Regarding the protest at Glasgow University on 22 March 2011, we are informed that there was a minimal police presence at the location to facilitate peaceful protest and to ensure the safety and security of all parties involved. We are further informed that at the conclusion of this demonstration, all protestors made the decision to disperse peacefully.

With regard to the incident at Ardenlea Street on 25 March 2011, we understand that the presence of Strathclyde Police was requested by Glasgow City Council to ensure public safety in relation to an eviction.  We further understand that at no time did Strathclyde Police take an active part in this eviction. The presence of police officers was to protect the public and deal with any disorder or other offence.

You should be aware that it is not for the Scottish Government to direct the police in operational matters or to comment on civil court cases. You may wish to direct any further queries to Glasgow City Council or Strathclyde Police.

I trust this has been helpful in explaining the Scottish Government’s position.

Yours sincerely

  1. No further comment (as you rightly say, there’s an election to be won), except just to repeat a worthy question which has been around for a while:

    "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?"

(Ah mean tae say ... gie’s a break ... helifeckincopters?!?!)
