“Episcopalians - the Tory Party and the Establishment at prayer.” I think you are referring to the Church of England. The Episcopalians, while now affiliated to all the Anglican churches throughout the world have a quite different history from the Church of England. During the 18th Century, for example. it was persecuted and outlawed in Scotland. 26 Church of England bishops do have seats in the House of Lords thus the often repeated quote you use. Scottish Episcopal bishops do not.
On Thursday 20 August 2009 Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church said “The decision to release Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi is a brave political choice taken in the face of strong pressure from outside Scotland. We respect and honour the courage which the Scottish Government has shown.

Thanks, markfairford. I was referring to the Episcopalians but my lumping them with the CofE, and failing to notice David Chillingworth's comment was both inaccurate and unfair. I apologise, and I will pull your comment out to the main blog to make sure this is noticed.
Thanks again!

It was a brave thing of the Rev Chillingworth to say, the more so as it made no reference to any possible guilt of Mr Megrahi, which the recent statement by Cardinal O'Brien failed to do.
ReplyDeleteThe point is Mr Megrahi had nothing to do with Lockerbie and was jailed as a result of faked abd perjured evidence. The real perpetrators of the bombing are of course the US government itself and tat of Iran, who managed to have the aircraft jointly destroyed so that Iran would get its much demanded revenge for the downing of the iranian Airbus.
If the Americans had not treated with the Iranians in this way between five and a dozen US commercial aircraft were thretebed with destruction and in consequence HW Bush's electoral ambitions would have been in tatters.
It was very silly for the captain of the Vincennes to have been given permission to fire his missiles, and onc the inevitable had happened, it was obvious that Iran would demand traditional revenge from the Americans, called qesas.
Thanks Charles.
ReplyDeleteI have my doubts about Megrahi's guilt, and certainly about whether he acted alone if he is guilty.
However, I cannot share your apparent certainty over his innocence, as contained in your statement "Mr Megrahi had nothing to do with Lockerbie and was jailed as a result of faked and perjured evidence".
Where is your evidence for such a claim?
As to the concept of Qesas in Islamic law, many regard this a simply vengeance or retribution by wronged family members, similar to the Judaic "an eye for an eye. a tooth for a tooth", and this culture of venegeance by the USA is exactly what the Cardinal was condemning.
However, my understanding is that modern Islamic law places the responsibility for Qesas squarely with the government, and removes it from the wronged families.
Charles, I have not reproduced the text of your latest email for the following two reasons -
ReplyDeleteFirstly, the charges you make and the sensitivity of the information you claim to have are a matter for the Scottish police, if you can back them up, and your personal involvement in these matters makes you vulnerable by pursuing them online.
Secondly, I don't like statements such as "Do get in touch with me if you dare."
Please don't contact me again.
